HERNDON, VA – Are you interested in bringing safety to a higher level at your company? Are you well prepared in the event of an OSHA inspection? Do you need help documenting and measuring employee injuries/incidents in order to lower job-related injury costs?
If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, the STARS (Safety Training Achieves Remarkable Success) Safe Company Program can assist you. This free program is ponsored by the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET). It is open to Green Industry companies (including landscape construction, maintenance, and design/build firms, as well as professional lawn care companies), will give you specialized assistance in developing a safety "culture" so you can reduce injury-related costs.
STARS members have access to a "STARS Champions" Advisory Council, made up of successful working safety managers at companies in our industry. Members also receive monthly e-mail/fax STARS Updates with practical checklists, sample policies, and sample forms, as well as other safety and OSHA-related information.
Here is an excerpt from the STARS Safe Company Program’s Checklist to Improve Your Tailgate Program:
- Has the same person (safety manager, crew leader, etc.) been conducting tailgate training sessions week after week, year after year?
- Have you identified key workers in each of your crews (those who are safety conscious, who know a lot about a certain topic, and who are respected by their peers) who could present these sessions instead?
- Have you started a tailgate program, then stopped it, then tried to start it up again – or have you been consistent in your messages about the importance of this training?
- Do you skip weekly tailgate training during the spring or other very busy periods of the year?
- Do you have an effective system in place to determine whether weekly tailgate training that is scheduled to be held actually IS held? If not, how can your current system be improved?
