TRAVERSE CITY, MI  —. Chris Fahrner was named the head groundskeeper of the Traverse City (MI) Beach Bums baseball team recently.

After getting his turfgrass degree from Michigan State, Fahrner saw a lot of the U.S.A. before returning to Michigan.

“Chris is a great fit to our staff,” said Beach Bums CEO John Wuerfel. “His experience in sports turf should help him continue the excellent care Wuerfel Park has enjoyed.”

To say that the newest Beach Bum has racked up a few frequent flyer miles in the past couple of years . . . well, judge for yourselves.

Fahrner earned his bachelors degree in turfgrass management from Michigan State University. He got his start in the industry with internships with the West Micigan Whitecaps in 2000, and then in Detroit for the Detroit Tigers in 2001 where he studied under Tigers head groundskeeper Heather Nabozny.

In the summer of 2002, he was named the head groundskeeper of the Salem-Keizer (OR) Volcanoes. From there he served in 2003 as the head groundskeepr of the Class A Delmarva (MD) Shorebirds and from there to the University of New Mexico before taking the job in Sacramento, CA. Fahrner, a Michigan native, served as manager of grounds for the Oakland Athletics Triple A Sacramento River Cats from 2004-2006.
