UFL training camp one step closer
14 Jan, 2009CASA GRANDE, AZ -- This city's planning and zoning commission gave thumbs up to the construction of a $20 million, 40-acre athletic complex near here. Plans for the complex, which will be shared by the city and the United Football League (UFL), show eight football fields -- six with turfgrass playing surfaces and two being artificial grass.
The site will also feature a 60,000-sq.-ft. community center, a 12,000-sq.-ft. maintenance compound, a 12-ft. by 40-ft. ramada, a small lake and a parking area, according to an article in the Casa Grande Newspapers recently.
The fields are to be used as training facility for the startup United Football League, which is preparing for play this coming fall. Initial releases from the UFL indicate there will be six teams, and they will play on Thursday and Friday evenings.
The UFL said it be will be announcing cities, owners and stadiums. Some cities that are in final negotiations and/or being discussed by the UFL include Hartford, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Monterrey (Mexico), New York, Orlando, Salt Lake City and San Francisco. The UFL is also in negotiations with a major national sports cable network for a weekly national primetime game. An announcement on UFL's TV partnership is forthcoming.
