Voters nix high school synthetic field
18 Jun, 2010 Athletic Turf NewsMARBLEHEAD, MA – The lousy economy and environmental concerns are being given as the primary reasons why voters here overwhelmingly defeated a proposal to build a synthetic turf sports field at Marblehead High School. The measure to resurface Sgt. Christopher Piper Field with synthetic turf lost by a 4097 to 1723 count.
Football coach Jim Rudloff says he was disappointed but understood, citing “the economic times” as one reason for voter refusal of the $1.5 million project.
Although supporters of the synthetic field waged a “Save the Earth, Vote for Turf,” citing water savings and pointing out that synthetic turf does not require the use of pesticides, opponents countered arguing that crumb rubber infill of a synthetic turf field poses health risks to young athletes and may end up in local bodies of water. They also pointed to build up of heat on the fields on sunny days.
