Buckeyes getting new FieldTurf practice field

24 Apr, 2010 Athletic Turf

COLUMBUS, OH — Ohio State is adding another FieldTurf football field to its athletic complex. The new surface will be a full-sized football field, and it will be a part of The Woody Hayes Athletic Complex at OSU. The installation of the new FieldTurf field is expected to commence around June 1. This new installation will be the third FieldTurf field on the Ohio State University campus.

The new FieldTurf football field will allow the Buckeyes to practice on the same surface on which they play their home games. Ohio State has played on FieldTurf at Ohio Stadium since it was installed there during the spring of 2007.

“It will be a tremendous advantage to our football program to have the same surface on our practice field as we have at Ohio Stadium,” said Ohio State Head Coach Jim Tressel. “With FieldTurf, there’s never any question of playability.”

“Ohio State is one of the true legendary American universities, and we’re thrilled to further expand FieldTurf’s relationship with the Buckeyes,” said FieldTurf Regional Vice-President (and Ohio State alumnus) Jim Knazek. “We have all been so pleased with the success of the first three seasons of the FieldTurf surface at Ohio Stadium, and we’re confident that this new practice field will be met with similar feedback. (Director of Athletics) Gene Smith, Coach Tressel and the staff at OSU have been a pleasure to work with. We will continue to provide the Buckeyes with what has become known as the world’s finest and safest playing surface.”

Ohio State football is one of the most decorated programs in NCAA history. The Buckeyes have won or shared the national championship five times, in 1942, 1954, 1957, 1968 and 2002. In addition, Ohio State players have captured seven Heisman Trophies, including Troy Smith (2006), Eddie George (1995), Archie Griffin (1974 & 1975), Howard Cassady (1955), Vic Janowicz (1950) and Les Horvath (1944).
