Dog helps relocate geese from parks... to golf course?

9 Mar, 2010 Athletic Turf News

NANAIMO, BC — As reported in the Vancouver Sun, geese are no longer a major issue for parks in Nanaimo, British Columbia, now that a trained border collie is on the case. The dog, which never harms the birds, was brought on for the task in late 2008.

"Nanaimo started employing a trainer and border collie in late 2008 to curb the problem at local sports fields, with Serauxmen field being hit particularly hard by droppings," the article reports. "Jim Plasteras, manager of parks operations, said thanks to the dog's geese-chasing efforts, droppings are no longer an issue in local parks."

However, the article goes on to interview Pryde Vista Golf Course general manager David Thaagaard, who says that some of the geese being chased from Serauxmen field are simply relocating to his course.
