No more offensive disinfectants
23 Oct, 2006 By: Landscape Management Staff Athletic TurfRochester Hills, MI — Field managers have a new defensive play in their arsenal to protect synthetic turf systems from the harmful effects caused by bacteria, mold, fungi and algae. The new turfD by SportCoatings provides long-lasting, antimicrobial protection for synthetic turf fields.
Traditional disinfectants function by a leaching action, which imparts chemicals or heavy metals into the environment and onto player’s skin. They also require frequent re-application schedules ranging from daily to bi-monthly regiments.
“TurfD offers field managers the whole package; superior performance, no negative impact to players or the environment and a lot less work,” said Craig Andrews, CEO Coatings Specialist Group. “The performance, price and protection of TurfD exceed all of the disinfectants currently on the market.”
“It is important, for the safety and maintenance of a field, that field managers take action to keep their synthetic turf clean,” said George Toma, NFL Hall of Fame Groundskeeper. Toma has seen a lot of strong chemical disinfectants applied to synthetic turf fields over the years. “With turfD, they can easily have antimicrobial protectionthat works but won’t harm the field or the environment.”
TurfD is the new entry level product in the successful TurfAide family that currently protects the fields of teams like the Minnesota Vikings and Virginia Tech. It combines a lot of the function and capabilities of the active antimicrobial in TurfAide. “Unlike TurfAide, which is warranted for up to 8 years and professionally applied, turfD offers six months of coverage in a lower-priced package that can be applied by properly trained field managers,” said Andrews.
Over time, the presence of bacteria, fungi, mold and algae can deteriorate the appearance and functionality of a synthetic turf field. Fields can develop stains, areas of discoloration as well as musty odors that affect the aesthetics of the playing surface. Additionally, functional issues like deterioration of materials and drainage problems can all be attributed to these microscopic inhabitants.
“Synthetic turf systems are a serious financial investment for schools and communities that should be protected from the negative effects of microbial contamination,” said Andrews.
TurfD is a one-time application that provides antimicrobial protection 24/7 for six months per step. The turfD program provides 2 years of round-the-clock antimicrobial protection for fields with just four applications.
The entire TurfAide family is powered by the ÆGIS Microbe Shield® technology — patented and proven 30 years ago to be one of the most effective non-leaching antimicrobial technologies on the market. Registered with the EPA, the ÆGIS Microbe Shield actively controls the growth of a wide array of bacteria, mold, fungi and algae.
TurfD is an extension of the Sports Antimicrobial System (SAS) by SportCoatings that includes TurfAide, SportsAide and SportsAide Fabric Conditioner. “From where teams prepare, to what they wear, to where they practice and play, the Sports Antimicrobial System is a 360-degree program for sports facilities offering 24 hour protection 365 days a year,” said Andrews.
A division of the Coatings Specialist Group (CSG), SportCoatings is the world leader in sports coatings offering a wide array of products that enhance, restore and maintain synthetic sports surfaces.
