Underhill Nastek Turf Stress Detection Glasses

31 Jul, 2007 By: Landscape Management Staff Athletic Turf News

Using technology developed by NASA, Underhill’s new Nastek turf stress detection glasses are designed to help golf course superintendents and sports field managers spot disease and turf problems before they become visible to the naked eye.

The Nastek lenses work by blocking out the green spectrum reflected from chlorophyll in healthy vegetation, which appears gray or black. Stress conditions, such as disease, drought, pests or poor nutrition, are revealed with glowing colors (red, coral, pink)  – and can be detected two to 10 days before they are visible to the unaided eye.

By “seeing the future of the turf,” golf course and sports field personnel using Nastek lenses can identify diseases early for treatment and can also spot wilting caused by drought or broken sprinklers; locate weeds for pesticide application; check mower blade sharpness and reduce overlapping cuts; plus identify tree disease and pest problems.

Turf diseases detected by the Nastek lenses include: fusarium patch, pythium blight, yellow patch, brown patch and anthracnose, along with poa grass invasions.
