2003 Seed Availability Guide: Blends & Mixes

1 Sep, 2003 By: Landscape Management Staff Landscape Management

Most
landscape and turfgrass professionals buy turfgrass seed in mixtures and/or
blends.

A mixture contains the seeds of more than one species of grass.
For instance it may contain perennial ryegrass and Kentucky bluegrass
seed — the perennial ryegrass for faster germination and green cover,
the Kentucky bluegrass for its beauty and ability to spread and fill in
bare spots.

A blend combines varieties (or cultivars) of the same species
with each variety possessing specific characteristics that make the turf
more durable and less prone to one specific pest or stress. For example,
one variety may be more drought resistant than another, while the second
variety may resist diseases better than the first.

Using mixtures or blends give you a better chance of establishing a quality
stand of turfgrass. Click on the links below to see charts with details
of various blends and mixes, including links to the respective marketers.
