Bradford Monroe named IA's 'Man of the Year'
7 Dec, 2008 LM Direct!ANAHEIM, CA -- The Irrigation Association named Bradford Monroe, CID, its "Person of the Year" at the recent 2008 Irrigation Show. Monroe is the director of the ornamental horticulture program at Cuyamaca College, El Cajon, CA.
Monroe started the first Certificate/Associate Irrigation Degree program in the State of California and has authored six books on irrigation design, installation and management during his 30-plus years as an educator.
The IA also honored:
-- Charles Meis with its "Industry Achievement Award." Meis is the vice president of research and development at the Lindsay Corporation, Lindsay, NE. He owns nine patents on irrigation equipment.
-- Karen Houson with the "Crawford Reid Memorial Award." Houson is the coastal manager for Eljay Irrigation, Victoria, British Columbia. She has been a leading voice in the Canadian irrigation industry throughout her career. She is the president of the Western Canadian Turfgrass Association and has also served as president of the Irrigation Industry Association of British Columbia (IIBAC) four times. She is an instructor for IIABC's Certified Irrigation Technician program, and teaches landscape programs at three local colleges in British Columbia.
The IA recognized the city of Palmdale, CA, with its National Energy & Conservation Award. Eighteen years ago, city leaders recognized the need for increased irrigation efficiency. By updating outdated and inefficient irrigation systems, and formulating an overall plan for better water management, Palmdale reduced water usage by 20% between 2006-2007, saving the city an estimated $235,000. Palmdale is also helping surrounding areas and neighboring towns to develop smart irrigation practices.
