How do you stand on the issue of “cosmetic pesticide use”?

That’s one of the questions that anti-pesticide organizations are putting to candidates for public office in Ottawa, the capital city of Canada.

The Canadian Cancer Society and the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE) want the public to know how the candidates feel about pesticides used in lawn care, according to a news report from the CBC.

The aim of the questionnaire sent to all candidates is to bring the issue back to the attention of Ottawa voters. The results of the questionnaire will be made public prior to the election set for Nov. 13.

Anti-pesticide organizations have been trying to get lawn care pesticides banned in Ottawa but have become concerned because the issue does not seem to be gathering much traction with the public.

Ottawa, with a population of about 850,000 in its metropolitan area, is the only major city in eastern Canada that has not either banned or severely restricted the use of lawn care chemicals such as herbicides and insecticides.

More than 100 cities and towns within Canada now have or are considering similar bans.
