Clearwater, FL, tightens water restrictions
28 Nov, 2008 LM Direct!CLEARWATER, FL -- In response to continued drought conditions in Florida, the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) extended severe water shortage restrictions passed on Jan. 9, 2007. This past Oct.28, SWFWMD modified those restrictions, as additional demand management measures to ensure water demands can continue to be met.
Created in response to the original water shortage restrictions imposed by SWFWMD, the Clearwater city manager ordered the following modifications through Feb. 27, 2009 or unless otherwise instructed by SWFWMD:
* Restricting the time for hand-watering or micro-irrigation for non-lawn landscaping, such as plants and shrubs, to before 8 a.m. or after 6 p.m.
* Postponing turf grass renovation, such as replacing lawns. Renovation includes sod replacement, vertical mowing (verticutting) or other means of rejuvenating an existing lawn that requires water such as seeding or plugging.
* Reducing the 60-day allowance for new plant establishment. During days 31-60, only every-other-day watering is allowed. Some cities or counties continue to have stricter allowances for new plant material.
* Reducing the time aesthetic fountains and waterfalls may operate from eight hours to four hours per day.
* All observed violations will be issued a citation.
