When Michael E. Gerber speaks, business people listen. And when he climbed atop a short stool at the Green Industry Expo Friday (GIE), Nov. 3, lawn care business owners and managers jostled for elbowroom at the Bayer Environmental Science booth. The small, energetic author and business consultant’s energy and passion washed over the appreciative audience like a warm ocean wave.

Michael E. Gerber showed more energy and passion for business than men a third his age.

Gerber is one of the most acclaimed business minds in the world. His appearance in support of the introduction of the Bayer Lawn Care Institute struck just the right note with the lawn care audience, many of them admittedly seeking to re-energize. Gerber is the creator of “The Turn Key Revolution,” a philosophy that’s been successfully used by more than 100,000 small and mid-sized companies to increase performance and productivity. He’s also the author of the E-Myth book series, including the best seller, “The E-Myth: Why Most Business Don’t Work and What to do About It.”

Gerber’s frank (and all too short) discussion about what it means to be a successful entrepreneur, generated just the right kickoff of the Bayer Lawn Care Institute. (Bayer’s launch was one of several supplier-initiated programs at the GIE focusing on “partnering” with end users on providing business help.)

“The goal of the Institute is to aid in the development, advancement and success of its members,” said a release from Bayer Environmental Science. “ Serving as a resource for information, the Institute will offer invaluable tools and services to improve marketing practices, retain good employees, keep overhead costs in check and more.”

In 2007 the Institute will sponsor the annual Healthy Lawns, Healthy Business Summits. The schedule is:

Jan. 25: Gaylord Texan, Dallas

Jan. 30: Sheraton Westport Plaza, St. Louis, MO

Feb. 6: Hilton Garden Inn, Baltimore, MD

Michael Daly serves as executive director of the Institute. He is the director of marketing for the Bayer Environmental Science Green Business group. Jennifer Remsberg is the communications director for the Institute as well as serving as communications manager for Bayer Environmental Science.

The advisory board of the Institute is comprised of: Greg Adams, One Step Tree & Lawn Care, North Chili, NY; Gary LaScalea, GroGreen, Inc., Plano, TX; Mike Markovich, Kapps Lawn Service, Fort Wayne, IN; Rob Palmler, Weed Pro Ltd., Sheffield Village, OH; Larry Ryan, Ryan Lawn & Tree, Overland Park, KS; Tom Shotzbarger, Tomlinson Bombarger Lawn Care & Landscape, Lancaster, PA; Sheri Spencer, Spencer Pest Solutions, Rosewell, GA; and Scott Williams, Lawn Master, Pensacola, FL
