NJ town considers leaf blower restrictions
7 Jan, 2009 LM Direct!MONTCLAIR, NJ — Lawmakers in this city of 39,000 in north central New Jersey are considering legislation to cut the spring use of leaf blowers from four months to six weeks. The proposed legislation would also ban older, noisier machines.
The proposal isn't sitting well with local landscapers, especially Jens Karns, who owns Upper Mountain Landscaping. He wrote a letter to the officials, telling them that the new rules would force him to replace his 19 backpack blowers and three ground blowers.
The ordinance, if passed, would allow the use of leaf blowers from March 15 to April 30, rather than what's presently allowed, from March 1 to June 30. The autumn period of use would remain Oct. 1 to Dec. 15.
