What better place for a major conference and exposition focusing on water efficiency than Las Vegas, right? The first ever WaterSmart Innovations Conference and Exposition is set for Oct. 8-10 at the South Point Casino there. It will showcase new water-efficient technology to industry and business from around the world.

There will be plenty of educational ?meat? in this inaugural event with more than a half-dozen specific informational tracks, including one focusing on landscape irrigation. In addition, three special workshops are planned.

His Royal Highness Prince Feisal Ibn Al-Hussein of Jordan will deliver the opening session keynote address at the event on Wednesday, Oct. 8. He is the chairman of the kingdom's Royal Water Committee and is active in water resource management and alternative resource development.

A recent World Bank report noted that Jordan is one of the world's 10 most water-deprived nations. According to the United States Agency for International Development, the average Jordanian has access to fewer than 200 cubic meters of water, or less than 53,000 gallons annually. In contrast, the average U.S. citizen has more than 9,000 cubic meters, or about 2.4 million gallons, of fresh water available per year. Exacerbating Jordan's water challenges is its growing population, expected to double by 2029.

Thursday, Oct. 9, during the conference, Benjamin Grumbles, Assistant Administrator for the Office of Water with the U.S. EPA will present the first-ever WaterSense Awards at the keynote luncheon. The speaker at the luncheon will be climatologist Dr. Jonathon Overpeck, direct of the Institute for the Study of Planet Earth at the University of Arizona, Tucson.
