The owners wanted to make their 25x60-ft. back yard, seen here in this "before" shot, more appealing. The home was relatively new and already had a two-tier concrete patio, which they enjoyed. A hedge that boxed in the southeast side would stay, with slight alterations, but the lawn and play structure could go.

0410-B"Mom is a textile artist who creates luscious, robust clothing from Angora wool. Dad loves his Boy Scout troop and being with his family. Their oldest daughter lives for reading, and their son is a 'monkey' who is always on the move," Nyce explains. "These personalities bring forth a need for a warm, playful garden with a vigorous feel."

0310-CThe design combines elements for each family member into a landscape that works harmoniously.  Stone, water and wood are incorporated into the setting. The upper terrace provides a heated place for morning tea and a bench for evening scout meetings. The fire pit is gas, making it useful for brief pleasures while eliminating smoke — promoting cleaner air than wood, as well as neighborhood friendliness.

"Lying in the hammock, watching the flowing water, at the end of the work week is the ultimate backyard experience — provided they can get there before their daughter," teases Nyce. Plus, a springless trampoline supplies action entertainment while not dominating the space.

0410-E The herb garden and covered grill give everyone a chance to be involved in planting, harvesting and cooking. "I am pleased with the dynamics of this small outdoor space, and how it enhances life for this vibrant family, weaved around a palette of living foliage," notes Nyce.

Nyce reports that there are Camellias for winter color, while "Corylopsis, Mahonia, Hellbores and Pulmonaria brighten early spring days, then give way to Exbury Azaleas, Petite Rhodies, Ajuga and Brunnera to walk out late spring. Summer is abloom with Parahebe, Rosa mutablis, Astranta and many other favorites, along with herbs. In the fall, gorgeous Japanese maples, Fothergilla and Clethra shine with color. And so, through the four seasons, this family has a sanctuary to experience."
