Green Is the New Black
29 Sep, 2006 By: Judith M. Guido LDB SolutionsYou may have heard or seen the billboards, magazines and advertisements touting "Green
is the new black." If so, you may be asking yourself what it means. It
is a clever way of saying that anything green (ecologically friendly) is hip
and fashionable.
Green cars (hybrids), homes (environmentally safe exteriors and interiors)
food and yes, even our gardens. There is another term to back up the green
is the new black statement and that is eco-chic. Eco-chic is about finding,
using and referring hip and first-to-market green products to support a clean,
safe and environmentally friendly lifestyle.
The phenomenon is changing landscaping and gardening. More than 5 million
American families are using all-natural gardening methods. The number of households
who definitely plan to use all natural gardening methods in the near future
will exceed 8 million households. Another 12 million families say they will
probably use a combination of natural and conventional landscaping and garden
methods. That’s a huge market!
Environmental stewardship is not only smart and effective, it is downright
en vogue and a great trend that you can and should be marketing. People are
opening their eyes to different ways to create beautiful and useful spaces
and live more in tune with the environment.
One way you can easily begin to market the process is to educate your audience
about the use of environmentally safe products on their lawns, shrubs and trees.
Marketing the advantages of using indigenous and native plants that are not
intrusive to the environment is also a simple first step. With some much emphasis
being placed on water conservation be certain to educate your target markets
about low-water-usage plants as well as a smart irrigation system that can
read weather changes and automatically gauge water output.
Your audience doesn’t realize what they don’t know. Become the
expert and share your knowledge as part of your marketing program.
