Northwest Tree: Acer Shirazz
16 Dec, 2008 By: Landscape Management Staff Get Growing
This recent Japanese maple introduction from New Zealand is unique in its leaf color. Shirazz is a complex blend of pinks, greens and creamy-white with new growth emerging as a striking, crimson-pink that turns to tones of scarlet in autumn. A vigorous, upright grower at first, branches become gracefully arching as they develop this toned foliage. Shirazz has been tested for cold hardiness in the U.S. through zone 5, weathering the cold like a champ. Grow Shirazz in full sun to part shade farther south for best color results. Mature plants reach 15 to 18 ft. high and 15 ft. wide. (Novalis)
