Project of the Month: A Backyard Retreat
29 Jan, 2007 By: Landscape Management Staff LDB SolutionsA steep back yard with almost no usable space is transformed into an area for entertaining and relaxing.
Designed by: Scapes, LLC, Atlanta, GA, www.scapesgroup.com
Challenges:
- The sloping back yard required a 12-ft. retaining wall to acheive a 30-ft wide level area.
- Access and construction sequence were challenging in the small space, requiring an access road to be built.
- Large trees with branches overhanging the home required a crane to section out the branches.

| The existing wall and deck will be revised without hampering the woodland feel. | |

| The retaining wall shows the existing topography and the need to create a usable space in the back yard. | |

|
| The desire to incorporate a spa, but not have it impact the back yard from a visibility standpoint, was the rationale for recessing it. Access to service areas were maintained. | |

| A stone step system provides a natural flow from the drive and the additional access created from the newly refurbished and revised deck | |

The curved steps invite visitors down into the outdoor living spaces. |

| The boulder wall ties into the step system. The revised deck, stairs and stone column add detail. | |

| The curved patio and entertainment space still feels like it's part of the woods. The patio shape is reinforced by a low shrub border and curved black wrought iron railing for safety. | |
|
The spa has a simple, functional presence. A smaller water feature with an evergreen screen provides a terminating point, minimizes sound from the neighbors and adds privacy. |

|
The completed back yard has a number of outdoor "rooms" that meet the clients' needs for privacy, outdoor space and beauty. |
