Well, here we are again at the start of another new year.

While the economy has had some positive signs of growth in 2011, we still have a long road ahead of us.

With an increase in guidelines and water restrictions impacting the marketplace, coupled with a gradual upswing in public interest, the need for measurable conservation methods poses a great opportunity for our industry.

After several years of meetings and draft specifications, the long awaited specification for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency WaterSense label for weather-based irrigation controllers is scheduled for release on Nov. 3.

As our industry continues to look for ways to overcome the ill effects of the economy, pressures over the changing landscape of water management, and other paramount issues, I am reminded of the true significance of the opportunities that events like the Water Summit provide.

Efficient nozzles, smart controllers, drip irrigation and flow sensors are making landscape irrigation more efficient.

Participants at the recent TOCA Conference were treated to a half dozen similiar but differing definitions of what sustainability means in the landscape business.

Our challenge was to make the most efficient use of the water we could using the existing system, which included a layout and design that was far from perfect.

The use of alternative water sources is an issue that will continue to gain momentum in our industry
