Water system planner says air-conditioner condensate can be used for irrigation

LM Week in Review

Falls Church, VA — The Irrigation Association announced that one of the technical papers being presented at the International Irrigation show next month recommends recycling air conditioner condensate for irrigation.

The author, Karen Guz, a conservation planner for the San Antonio Water System, reports that a San Antonio shopping mall collects 500 gallons an hour from its air conditioners and uses it for a cooling tower. Guz writes that the water could be diverted for landscaping. In addition, a San Antonio library recycles its air conditioner condensate for irrigation.

Air conditioner condensate and other alternative water sources like graywater and rooftop cisterns will be discussed in detail during presentations at the International Irrigation Show in Tampa, FL November 14-16.

Other technical landscape presentations will cover how and why to irrigate new synthetic turfs, the impact of water conservation programs on landscape water use, using climate-based controller technology, and information on new sprinkler technology.
