Sophora japonica is a medium-sized, deciduous tree that usually reaches a maximum height of 40 ft.  It blooms in early summer with cream-colored, pea-like flowers that are mildly fragrant. Its yellow seed pods hang on the tree through the fall and may persist through winter. It has few insect or disease issues, and grows well in hot, dry areas and city conditions. It prefers well-drained soils.
