Silver Birch

16 Aug, 2010 Get Growing

Silver Birch (Betula pendula) is a deciduous tree known for its white bark and slender trunk. It typically reaches 50 to 80 ft. tall. It has triangular leaves with serrated edges. Silver Birch produces cylindrical flower clusters each spring and winged seeds each summer. As silver birch ages, its bark becomes more fissured, making it susceptible to attack by the birch polypore fungus Piptoporus betulinus. Most trees die after about 70 years.
