Tree: River Birch
15 Apr, 2010 Get Growing
The river birch (Betulaceae Betula nigra L.) deciduous tree can grow up to 90 ft. high and spread tree 30 to 50 ft. It grows fairly rapidly, reaching 20 to 40 ft. in 20 years. In urban settings, it normally lives 30 to 40 years. Its leaves are 1 1/2 to 3 in. long with a wedge-shaped base. Its bark is smooth on young trees, then becomes scaly on older trees with tan to brown coloring. It does well in full sun in moist areas and near the edge of waterways, hence its name.
