International Rose Trials Award Winners

A group of 54 international judges awarded the most points to a rose named "Always and Forever." The red hybrid tea rose was among the winners at the International Rose Trails, held at the Pageant of Roses Garden at Rose Hills Memorial Park. Six gold medals were also awarded. They went to "Beauty Within," "Julia Child," "Magic Show," "Silicon Valley Diamond," "Singin' the Blues," and "White Licorice."
Rose Hills is approximately 1,400 acres of property, and is the largest single-operated cemetery in the U.S. The Pageant of Roses Garden opened in 1986, spanning 3.4 acres and is the largest rose trial in the United States. It is an official display garden for both the American Rose Society (ARS) and the (All-America Rose Selections) AARS, as well as a miniature display and test site for the ARS.
"Always and Forever" was bred by Dr. Keith Zary. It has 25-30 petals, a mild fragrance and an average diameter of 5 in. It also has a high disease resistance. It is being introduced by Jackson & Perkins Co. via Weeks Roses.
The "Beauty Within" floribunda rose has yellow blooms with red edges and a moderate spice fragrance. The semi-double blooms average 5 in. in diameter.
The rose "Julia Child" has a rounded habit, glossy leaves and disease resistance. The butter-colored rose is a 2006 AARS award winner. It's available from Weeks Roses.
"Magic Show" is a mini-flora rose was hybridized by Frank Benardella. It features white petals with a red edge and white reverse. Borne mostly solitary, the 2-in. diameter flowers bloom in flushes throughout the season. Magic Show displays glossy, dark green foliage and performs well as both a potted plant and a garden rose. Magic Show also was a 2010 Award of Excellence winner for the American Rose Society and will be part of a Greenheart Farms' mini-flora collection beginning in spring 2011.
The "Silicon Valley Diamond" rose from Conard-Pyle is a miniature rose with pearl-colored flowers and dark-green foliage. It can be grown in containers or planters, in addition to the landscape. It reaches about 18 in. tall and spreads about 12 in.
"Singin' the Blues," also available from Conard-Pyle, is a fragrant, deep lavender flowered floribunda rose. The aroma has hints of citrus and verbena. It grows to a height of 6 ft. and spreads up to 3 ft. "Singin' the Blues is hardy in Zones 6-9.
"White Licorice" has a chiffon to white color bloom with a licorice fragrance mixed with lemon, The branched plants create numerous flowers and have good disease resistance. White Licorice was bred by Christian Bedard and is available from Weeks Roses.
