Tree: Blue Spruce, Picea Pungens

15 Dec, 2009 By: Landscape Management Staff Get Growing

It wouldn't seem like the holidays without the Blue Spruce. These large evergreens can be used in landscapes as specimen trees, windbreaks and for privacy. They need plenty of room because they can reach 50 ft. at maturity at spread to 20 ft. wide, so they shouldn't be planted close tot he home. Of course, smaller cultivars are available. Cultivars often have distinctive blue needles that can grow more than an inch long, but green needles are also common. Three-inch cones turn from green to brown as they mature. They prefer full sun to partial shade and moist, acidic, well-drained soils. After becoming established, they are drought-tolerant and cold-hardy.
