Common Hackberry

13 May, 2010 Get Growing

Hackberry (Celtis occidentals) is a deciduous shade tree that grows fast, reaching 15 ft. tall in 20 years, though it can reach up to 60 ft. tall when fully mature. It is tolerant of soggy soil, drought, poor soil and pollution. It has edible berries that attract birds. It grows with a single-trunk pattern with a broad crown shape similar to elm trees. It's leaves are 3- to 5 in. long, turning yellow in fall.
