There are more than 50 species of Lagerstroemia, which is commonly known as crape myrtle. Some are evergreens, some are deciduous and some are shrubs. Many have been developed by the U.S. National Arboretum. Lagerstroemia indica and hybrids within this species are hardy to USDA Hardiness Zones 7 to 9, but are often killed to the ground in severe winters in Zone 7, according to the U.S. National Arboretum. They have colorful blooms that range from white, to lavender, to pink, to purple and red, depending on the species. Dwarf species are available.
