Florida Water Star volunteer receives Owens Award

29 Jun, 2010 LM Direct!

PALATKA, FL — Judy Benson, a certified irrigation designer and certified irrigation auditor from Winter Springs who has volunteered with the St. Johns River Water Management District's Florida Water

Star program, has been recognized by the District's Governing Board with its 2010 Bob Owens Award.

Benson has provided expert input to the district on efficient irrigation design and how best to accomplish efficiency with minimal economic impact.

"Judy's real-world contracting and design experience has assisted district staff in understanding how best to maximize water savings in residential irrigation systems," said Deirdre Irwin, the District's Florida Water Star coordinator.

Similar to the federal ENERGYSTAR program but with a water conservation focus, the Florida Water Star certification program encourages water efficiency in household appliances, plumbing fixtures, irrigation systems and landscapes.

Other 2010 Bob Owens Award recipients are Joseph Branham of Okahumpka, Jim Escoffier of Merritt Island, Trina Raether of Leesburg, and Vince Lamb of Merritt Island.

The annual District award is named for the late Bob Owens of Ormond Beach, a vocal supporter of environmental programs who attended nearly every District Governing Board meeting from the mid-1970s until his death in 1991.
