Nutrients PLUS works with poultry operation to expand organic fertilizer capabilities

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — Nutrients PLUS, LLC, headquartered here, announces an agreement with New Day Farms, LLC, an Ohio poultry layer corporation, for exclusive right to purchase New Day’s composted poultry manure, an organic additive for its fertilizers. Through extensive research conducted by The Ohio State University, New Day’s approach to processing this resource makes for a refined input into Nutrients PLUS’ formulations.

“The NP Way system is waste stream neutral," said Nutrients PLUS President John Moriarty. “This unique source from layers at New Day is for recycling valuable plant nutrients and organic matter. This agreement strengthens the contract Nutrients PLUS had with the former owners dating back to 2003. We are expanding our efforts to purchase this source, as well as others, and New Day Farms is an excellent partner for us to meet our goal."

On a broader scope, Moriarty explains that, through the NP Pathway To Solutions analysis of production processes and its leverage with other partners, the company provided an innovative opportunity for New Day to sell its screening equipment to Nutrients PLUS.

"One of our other Nutrient PLUS channel partners seized the opportunity to expand the blending and packaging services they provide us to include screening," he explains. "This was one of those win, win, and win solutions where our years of experience in the industry paid off.”

With 1.6 million laying hens and sophisticated composting, the New Day operation produces the fertilizer for Nutrients PLUS. While most organic products are pellets from mills making cylindrical, extruded particles with edges that flake, this product, Nature Pure, is not a poultry litter containing bedding material such as sawdust. The high-calcium diet for egg layers produces a nutrient-rich, litter-free compost with 9% calcium, and the production minimizes salt levels common to less-processed manures. The biological activity is preserved because composting processes involve no use of dryers, and granulation occurs simultaneously.

Extensive testing has shown Nature Pure has consistently performed. According to an Ohio State study, "Natural Organic Source Evaluation on a Kentucky Bluegrass-Perennial Ryegrass Mixture-1996," eight to nine weeks after treatment, “Nature Pure provided the best residual responses at the 1N/M rate” (one lb. of nitrogen per 1,000 sq. ft.). In the same study, Nature Pure was one of four fertilizers that “provided the best residual color/quality responses for twelve to thirteen weeks.”

“Being partners with Nutrient PLUS is exciting for us,” said Loren Asche, New Day’s vice president of production. “In the past, most manure has been used in the agriculture industry, and this opens another means of using the composted manure in an environmentally sound manner.”
