Vanguard wins World of Concrete award

31 Mar, 2010 LM Direct!

MILWAUKEE — Briggs & Stratton Commercial Power is pleased to announce that Vanguard single-cylinder engines with the TransportGuard system won a Most Innovative Product (MIP) Award at the 2010 World of Concrete Show. The new engines are available with gross horsepower ratings from 5.5 hp to 10.0 hp.

Exclusive to Vanguard, the new engines feature a single lever design called the TransportGuard system. During transport, engines are subjected to vibration causing fuel to flow through the engine and into the oil. The TransportGuard system simultaneously shuts off fuel and the ignition eliminating oil/fuel dilution during transportation.

“We were delighted to receive a MIP award,” said Dan Roche, marketing manager for Briggs & Stratton Commercial Power. “It’s amazing how one simple solution can solve so many worksite problems. By listening to our customers, we determined that fuel in the oil was costing equipment owners and rental firms’ money. The TransportGuard system solves this problem.”

Fuel in the oil drastically reduces viscosity resulting in more friction and increased wear. Shutting off the fuel and the ignition at the same time helps eradicate fouled plugs, hydraulic lock, cylinder wash down and crankcase oil dilution ultimately saving money by decreasing downtime and repair costs.

The new Vanguard single-cylinder engines also address top worksite challenges including heavy dust, lack of regular maintenance and filtration issues. Engineers designed each component and integrated technology to efficiently work together raising durability and reliability standards.

Additional features include:

  • A high-mounted canister-style air cleaner has 22 percent more filter area
  • An all-metal fuel tank is mounted directly to the engine block to reduce emissions and add durability
  • Airflow generated by a high-capacity fan is 15 percent greater than the competition
  • Air-filter is water-repellent and protected by a full metal cage; features an innovative triple-seal design to dramatically decrease dirt, dust and debris intake
  • Large, efficient sediment filter collects in a clear bowl and easily drains through a convenient no-tools valve
  • Commercial-style carburetor includes additional fuel passages assuring easy starting and smooth operation at a wide range of speeds and loads
  • Deep ribs on the cylinder head add strength and increase cooling; precision mating surfaces between the cylinder head and cylinder maximize sealing and torque
  • Forged crankshaft with dual ball bearings minimize friction and heat build-up
  • Intake, fan and exhaust noise are minimized to best-in-class levels
  • Motorsports proven rod/dipper design efficiently improves oil flow assuring maximum protection of component parts
  • Oil sensor automatically shuts down the engine in low oil situations extending engine life
