August 2013 Web Extra: How to achieve change

August 2, 2013 -  By

The journey for meaningful change that will bring forth resonant leadership, referred to in “Are you a resonant leader?” in the August 2013 issue of Landscape Management, is laid out in emotional intelligence expert Richard Boyatizis’ Intentional Change Theory. Here are the steps required:

  1. Identify your ideal self: Who do you want to be?
  2. Identify your real self: Who are you?
    1. Strengths—where your ideal and real self overlap
    2. Gaps—where your ideal and real self differ
    3. Identify your learning agenda—building on your strengths while reducing gaps.
    4. Experiment—with new behavior, thoughts and feelings.
      1. Practice the new behavior, building new neural pathways through to mastery.
      2. Develop trusting relationships that help support and encourage each step in the process.
