Now that we’re closing in on the halfway point of the calendar year, it’s an appropriate time to evaluate how the year is going. Many of you are on track to meet, or even exceed, your goals for 2019. This may be due to strong economic demand, good teamwork or other factors. If this describes you, what needs to happen to finish strong in the second half of the year? Who needs to do what? By when?

Many others may be off track to achieve their goals for 2019. This may be due to labor shortage issues, high turnover or other factors. If this describes you, what needs to change to get back on track? Who needs to do what? By when?

Still others have no clue if they’re on track or off track since they haven’t taken the time to establish goals for 2019. If this describes you, this mid-year check-in is the perfect opportunity to roll up your sleeves and develop some goals for the remainder of 2019 so that you and your team will know if it’s on track or off track.

I love the analogy of a business being like a train. It takes great energy to get a train moving, but once it gets rolling, it is much easier to keep rolling; and once the train overcomes the mountain and begins to rumble down the backside, it is unstoppable. Developing goals helps you determine which track to go down. If you or your team don’t know which track to pursue, there’s no reason to exert any energy trying to get it moving. But once the track is clear, there’s nothing stopping you and your team from giving it all you’ve got.

What is the goal for the remainder of 2019? What benchmarks will help keep you on track? Who is responsible for what? What deadlines exist? By answering these basic questions, you and your team will be well on your way to getting the train rolling.

Now go forth.
