Each June, the National Safety Council encourages organizations and communities to participate in National Safety Month, an annual observance to educate and encourage safe behaviors around leading causes of preventable injuries and deaths.

This year’s observance highlights the need to practice safe behaviors 24/7, as three times as many employees are injured off the job than while at work. Free materials including posters, facts sheets and quizzes are available atnsc.org/nsm to help spread these safety messages.

Each week in June carries a safety theme that reflects high rates of injuries, which include:

Unintentional deaths reached an estimated 126,100 in 2010, compared with an estimate of 122,700 in the previous year. The cost of unintentional injuries to Americans and their employers exceeds $730 billion nationally, or $6,200 per household, according to the National Safety Council.
