The National Garden Bureau reports that Panicum virgatum ‘Northwind’ is the Perennial Plant Association’s 2014 Perennial Plant of the Year. Deep roots make this switchgrass species drought-tolerant, once established. It thrives in Zones 4 to 10 and full sun, but will tolerate light shade and nearly any soil. Like most ornamental grasses, it is seldom eaten by deer.
