FEATURED WEED

Common lespedeza
Lespedeza striata

WEED DESCRIPTION
Commonly found in soils with low fertility, lespedeza grows close to the ground in thin turf and dry, compacted areas. Leaves are trifoliate, with lance-shaped stipules and hairs along the leaf margins. Stems are wiry, prostrate and branch freely. Small, single pink-to-purple flowers grow from the leaf axils.
CONTROL TIPS
Apply a postemergence granular product, such as LockUp® specialty herbicide, when lespedeza is actively growing in warm-or-cool-season turf. Confront® and Lontrel® specialty herbicides can also be used to control lespedeza on commercial turf sites. If turf is thin or compacted, aerate the affected area, raise your mowing height and keep appropriate fertility levels for your turf.

Keep it Clean

By EMILY SCHAPPACHER
It’s an unfortunate fact every lawn care operator knows to be true: There is no foolproof way to control weeds. That said, you can fight weeds effectively. Clean beds along with proper use of mulch and pre-emergent herbicides is the best defense against landscape bed weeds.

Crabgrass control in late spring?

It’s possible with Dimension® specialty herbicide — the only preemergent that offers early postemergence crabgrass control. Apply Dimension early or late in the season and eliminate the need to switch products after crabgrass has germinated. This longer application window allows for more application flexibility, ultimately reducing the need to come back and re-treat.
