FEATURED WEED

Common Chickweed
Stellaria media

WEED DESCRIPTION
This low-spreading prostrate winter annual grows in dense patches almost anywhere. Light green leaves are oval and oppositely arranged. Stems run along the ground, rooting at the nodes, with the upper portion erect and branching freely. Small white flowers grow in clusters at the ends of stems. Commonly mistaken for mouse-ear chickweed (Cerastium vulgatum), common chickweed leaves are less hairy and lighter in color.

CONTROL TIPS
Common chickweed germinates in the fall and early winter and flowers in the spring. For optimum control, apply a product, such as Defendor® specialty herbicide, prior to bloom. This postemergence product works at preemergence timing to control winter annuals and perennials that have started growing, but are hiding in the turf canopy.

Ability to Adapt

By EMILY SCHAPPACHER
LCOs who offer flexible application programs can maximize weed control and keep customers happy, while using product more efficiently. Using different products to treat specific issues allows LCOs to use less product for better results. Applying three-way products, seeking unbiased research before selecting a product and identifying the best time of year for application are just a few key strategies that yield better results.
