FEATURED WEED Black Medic Medicago lupulina WEED DESCRIPTION This low-trailing annual is commonly found in lawns stressed from compaction, heat and drought. Often confused with clover, black medic is easily distinguished by its bright yellow flowers and unique leaf arrangement. Look for three leaflets with the center leaflet on a separate petiole. Prostrate stems grow from a taproot. CONTROL TIPS Black medic germinates at temperatures between 50 F and 75 F. It sometimes grows as a winter annual, sprouting in the fall and overwintering. Apply a postemergence product, such as Defendor® specialty herbicide, when the plants are young and actively growing.
