FEATURED WEED
Goosegrass
Eleusine indica
WEED DESCRIPTION
This prostrate summer annual grows in clumps, usually in compacted soils in high-traffic areas. It emerges a few weeks after crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis), and continues well into the summer. This coarse bunch-type grass features dark green leaves that form a basal rosette of prostrate flattened stems. Commonly mistaken for crabgrass, goosegrass is distinguished by its white to silver base.
CONTROL TIPS
Pair strong maintenance with a herbicide to keep goosegrass at bay. For complete control, apply a product, such as Dimension® specialty herbicide, just before crabgrass germination. This timing will provide season-long control of both crabgrass and goosegrass. Proper fertilization, mowing and irrigation can improve turfgrass health and encourage density. Spring aeration will help alleviate soil compaction.
