FEATURED WEED
Aster, slender
Eurybia compacta
IDENTIFICATION TIPS
This herbaceous annual weed, slender aster, is commonly found in the southeastern United States along the coastal plains in dry, sandy soils. Slender aster is a small, erect plant with several stems and a thick, woody base — that when left untreated can grow one to three feet tall. Growing in warmer temperatures, this spring/summer weed easily camouflages itself in lawns and fields, hiding under taller, more aggressive grasses.
CONTROL TIPS
Slender aster’s flowers produce tiny seeds, dispersed by wind and water, so it’s essential to control this weed before it flowers and goes to seed. Apply a preemergence herbicide that contains isoxaben — such as Gallery® specialty herbicide — or a combination of isoxaben and trifluralin in early spring, before soil temperatures are warm enough to initiate germination.
