Scotts acquires Blossom, PlantLink

scotts-miracle-gro-logoScotts Miracle-Gro acquired two technology companies: Blossom, which makes smart irrigation controllers, and PlantLink, which has soil sensors and a smart water valve system. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Both companies have products that support the Scotts Water Positive Landscapes Initiative and Connected Yard Internet of Things (IOT) solution, the company said.

“We have had a solid partnership with Blossom and PlantLink and look forward to taking these platforms to the next level,” said Peter Supron, chief of staff to the president of ScottsMiracle-Gro. “It is our goal to bring higher levels of awareness to lawn and garden smart IoT devices and help companies with these types of products grow. By leveraging technology, we can provide consumers with integrated solutions that can extend into many aspects of their lawns and gardens.”

Scotts said it will put more resources—including product development, marketing support and retail channel expansion—toward Blossom and PlantLink. Both companies’ products have been primarily sold through retailers. That will continue, but Scotts will also make the products available in retail stores where other Scotts products are sold.

Scotts previously partnered with Blossom and PlantLink to launch Connected Yard, a data and water management software, in early 2016. Connected Yard is now available on iOS and Android devices through the company’s Gro app.
