LOCATION Columbus, Ohio

COMPANY Rine Landscape Group

DETAILS The client wanted a rustic, farmhouse-inspired landscape that complemented the architecture of their home while extending it for family life and entertainment. To integrate the existing pool into this vision, the project followed a phased master plan that preserved the property’s natural beauty and unified the outdoor environment.

Phase one enhanced curb appeal by highlighting the farmhouse style and wraparound porch while incorporating efficient mowing lines, low-maintenance plantings and simplified irrigation. Phase two transformed the space between the home and pool into a cohesive outdoor living environment for family gatherings and entertaining. A central, year-round pavilion connects the home and pool, featuring a wood-paneled ceiling, a grilling island and a dual-sided fireplace. A curved limestone wall adds seating and defines a separate area.

Before beginning work, key conditions were addressed, including locating the septic system and resolving standing water between the pool and garage. “To accommodate these constraints, we recommended smaller weeping trees instead of a single large anchoring tree, preserving system safety and design integrity. We also installed French drains,” says Shawn Rine, CEO, Rine Landscape Group.

Several elements were essential to achieve the client’s vision. “We incorporated curves to echo the pool area and a connection for the front and back of the estate,” says Rine. A consistent, earthy palette unified the hardscaping, structures and plantings, complementing the home’s brick foundation and natural surroundings.

To balance budget and aesthetics, “we proposed using high-quality pavers with a natural stone appearance as an alternative to bluestone,” Rine says. “This choice maintained a high-end aesthetic and reserved budget for focal areas.”

The plantings include magnolias, zelkova, hydrangeas, taxus and hostas, adding texture and seasonal color. To create privacy, trees and grasses were added to soften the hard edges and frame the pool, Rine says.

A low-maintenance water feature provides relaxing sounds without pond upkeep. Premium outdoor lighting was also installed to highlight the architecture and ensure safe wayfinding.

In 2025, the National Association of Landscape Professionals’ Awards of Excellence program recognized the firm with a gold award for this project.
