As part of the story “Tier 4: What you need to know,” published in the January 2015 issue of LM, here’s the anticipated health benefits of the Tier 4 standards according to the Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Transportation and Air Quality (EPA, OTAQ).
The EPA, OTAQ predicts health benefits from the Tier 4 standards will equate to $80 billion annually once all older engines are replaced. In addition, it estimates the regulations will prevent the following circumstances every year by 2030:
- 12,000 premature deaths;
- 8,900 hospitalizations;
- 1 million work days lost;
- 15,000 heart attacks;
- 6,000 children’s asthma-related emergency room visits;
- 280,000 respiratory problems in children
- 200,000 cases of asthma in children; and
- 8 million days of restricted adult activity due to respiratory symptoms.
